Vattenfall Background

Owned by the Swedish government, Vattenfall is one of the largest electricity generators in Europe. They supply 6.3 million customers in Europe and recently entered the UK’s commercial energy market in mid-2017. Vattenfall also operates in Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

The large majority of energy generated by Vattenfall is renewable, and the company has invested £3 billion in UK-based wind generation since 2008.

They offer fixed and flexible contracts, as well as the opportunity to buy energy wholesale and portfolio management. Vattenfall’s electricity is generated from wind, hydro, biomass, solar, nuclear, coal and gas.

Vattenfall Smart Meter

Smart meters aren’t mentioned on the UK Vattenfall website. Smart meters are designed for domestic and micro business customers, so wouldn’t be suitable for larger businesses that use a lot of power.

Vattenfall Meters

Half-hourly and non-half-hourly meters are available through Vattenfall. Non-half hourly are for businesses with a supply under 100 kVA and can be read manually or use Automated Meter Reading (AMR) technology. AMR is similar to having a smart meter in the sense that readings are reported automatically for greater accuracy.

Half-hourly meters are most suited to businesses with a supply of over 100 kVA. They will send automatic readings to your supplier every half an hour using your phone line or internet connection.

Vattenfall Bills

Payment methods aren’t explained in any detail, but Direct Debit is likely to be the preferred payment method.

Vattenfall App

There’s no app available, but customers will be able to log into Vattenfall’s online portal to manage their account:

  • Manage the contract and view its information.
  • View and download meter consumption reports.
  • View and download bills.
  • Contact customer services.

Switching To Vattenfall

When switching, you usually need to provide:

  • How much you’re spending on energy right now (either annually or monthly, but ideally both)?
  • When your current contract date ends and if there are any exit fees.
  • What your consumption rates are.
  • Your up-to-date meter readings.

Moving Locations With Vattenfall

If you’re moving to new premises, it’s wise to give Vattenfall as much notice as possible. They don’t include any more information on their UK website.

Vattenfall Fuel Mix

Vattenfall has a breakdown of all their renewable sources on their corporate website. The large majority of the energy they produce is renewable, but they will use coal assets.

UK average:

Coal – 8.5%
Natural gas – 44.1%
Nuclear – 21.0%
Renewable – 24.2%
Other – 2.2%

Vattenfall Summary

Despite an established presence in Europe, Vattenfall is still a newcomer in the British energy market. Judging by their announcement, it seems they’re more likely to cater to large corporate businesses than SMEs. Positively, they have a wide range of renewable energy sources, but a lack of reviews could make them a tricky choice to weigh up.

  • Focus on renewable electricity.
  • Very established in Europe.
  • Various fixed and flexible products.

  • Very few public reviews (most are written in Swedish).
  • Still use coal, so not 100% renewable.
  • Cater more to large corporate businesses.
