Switch To A Business VoIP System
Switch to Business VoIP before January 2027 to stay connected
Why Switch To Business VoIP?
The traditional telephone network operated by BT Openreach is being phased out and will no longer function after January 2027.
To maintain connectivity, businesses must transition to a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) digital phone line system before this deadline.
There are two types of VoIP systems: hosted and non-hosted.
Hosted VoIP
Hosted VoIP allows businesses to outsource the costs associated with building powerful servers, hardware, and software to a third-party provider. This option is popular among small businesses, as it requires minimal setup costs. If you have VoIP-enabled phones, you simply need to purchase a license, and you’ll be ready to go. Just make sure your business broadband can support the additional bandwidth.
Non-hosted VoIP
Non-hosted solutions require a considerable investment in servers and hardware that you will manage on your premises. Additionally, ongoing maintenance and upkeep costs will be required. Many large businesses opt for this option since they have the necessary space and budget to cover the initial investment costs.
Business VoIP Phone System Benefits
UK connectivity providers will cease offering traditional telephone landlines as we transition to a digital network. There are several advantages to using a business VoIP system.
Phone System That Grows With Your Business
You can easily add new lines by connecting an additional handset, eliminating the need for Openreach engineers to visit your premises and disrupt your workday. Just make sure your broadband speeds can accommodate the extra devices.
Additional Phone Features
Business VoIP systems can provide advanced features such as call routing, recording, analytics, cyber encryption, voice-to-email, professional call holding, conference calls, CRM integration, and more.
Business VoIP Costs
VoIP costs can vary based on your specific needs, but many businesses find they save money when switching to a digital phone line. Expenses may include an initial setup fee, the cost of equipment and handsets, and the ongoing monthly subscription for your chosen package. The monthly fee typically depends on the number of users. It’s advisable to consider the features your business requires and the number of users to obtain an accurate quote.

What Is The PSTN Switch-Off?
Starting in January 2027, the way we make phone calls will change significantly. The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) will be shut down, which means everyone will need to transition to digital-based telephone systems. As a result, any equipment that currently relies on the PSTN will cease to function. This includes landline phones, alarms, EPOS payment systems, door entry systems, and CCTV systems. The deadline for this transition has been extended from 2025 to give people more time to adopt a digital VoIP solution.
BT Openreach is implementing this change because the existing copper wire system is outdated and difficult to maintain. It is crucial to take action now and switch to a Hosted VoIP system to avoid a last-minute rush as the deadline approaches.
Understanding Your Business Phone Bill
When you receive your first business phone bill, you may find some of the charges confusing. To help you understand, we have broken down a typical bill, explained each section, and provided lists of the types of charges and potential fees you can expect.
Each page of your bill should include the date it was issued, your account number, and the bill reference number. In the example from BT Business shown below, this information is displayed in the top right-hand corner of the page. Additionally, every page will feature your supplier's logo and branding.
- Page 1 of your business phone bill includes the account holder's name and business address. It also presents a summary of your quarterly bill, which includes VAT. If you have already paid the bill, the invoice will specify your chosen payment method.
- Page 2 provides a summary of charges for the quarter. This section details your usual payments (excluding VAT), the amount of VAT charged for the period, and a total that combines both the charges and VAT.
Below this summary, you may see unpaid payments that have been carried forward. You will typically find a total figure outlining your charges inclusive of VAT for that period, along with any outstanding payments added together.
At the bottom of the page, there is a VAT summary outlining the total VAT charged, as well as a total amount excluding VAT.

- Page 3 usually shows your VAT summary. As you can see in the image below, it shows the total amount of VAT paid, and the bill total including VAT. Beneath that, it outlines which of your packages were charged VAT, and their totals.
- Page 4 in our example business bill shows a breakdown of your charges in detail, the date range, and how much VAT you paid. It also highlights the total of all your charges.
