The History of Eastern Electricity
Eastern Electricity was formed in 1990 when the UK electricity market was privatised. Eastern Electricity took its assets from the former Eastern Electricity Board which was formed in 1948 as a result of the Electricity Act 1947 that nationalised of UK electricity industry.
Eastern Electricity Board was formed from 21 Local Authority electricity businesses and 17 private business enterprises. The Eastern Electricity Board was responsible for the electricity supply and distribution in the East of England covering Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, and parts of the surrounding areas.
Eastern Electricity later became the Eastern Group.
In 1995, Hanson plc bought Eastern Group. In 1997, they separated the energy business from the rest of their business and created the Energy Group which they floated on the Stock Exchange.
In 1998, the Energy Group was purchased by TXU Europe which was a Texas utility company and the UK business operated as TXU Energi.
In 2002, TXU pulled out of Europe and Powergen purchased TXU Energi. The energy supply and distribution business were later sold to Electricite de France (EDF), the French state-owned energy company.
EDF were operating in the UK as LE Group until in 2002 when they created EDF Energy as a result of their acquisitions. EDF Energy already owned three other former regional electricity boards in the UK, London Electricity, SWEB Energy, and SEEBOARD.
In 2010, EDF Energy sold its distribution networks from the former Eastern Electricity, SWEB, and SEEBOARD companies to UK Power Networks which was owned by Hong Kong utility group, Cheung Kong Group.
