Octopus Energy received a lot of positive reviews that were largely around their customer service, professionalism, competitive pricing, and proportion of renewable energy in the fuel mix.

Octopus Energy Business Energy

Octopus Energy offers three business tariff rates for electricity that are either fixed or flexible contract lengths, these also include green business energy tariffs.

Octopus Energy Background Information

Octopus Energy was established as an energy supplier in 2016 and currently has over 6.6 million customers due to acquiring customers from Iresa Energy (100,000), Affect Energy (22,000), ENGIE Energy (70,000), Avro Energy (580,000), Bulb Energy (1.5-million) and M&S Energy in April 2023 (60,000) and as of December 2023, Octopus acquired 1.3 million UK and German retail customer from Shell Energy's UK and German retail arm (migrations ongoing at time of writing in January 2024).

Octopus is focused on supplying green energy and in 2018 the energy supplier switched all their customers to renewable energy sources.

Octopus Energy is not only an energy supply but is an energy generator too through their sister brand Octopus Energy Generation. They built their first solar farm in 2011 and now manage 240 large-scale energy projects across 10 countries.

They have also invested in wind generation, anaerobic digestion plants, and rapid response gas generation to balance the energy fluctuations from solar and wind.

Octopus Group has several businesses including investments, healthcare, venture capital, property finance, finance technology, energy generation, and energy supply.

Octopus Energy Smart Meter

Octopus Energy is installing smart meters wherever meters are broken or when requested, but they aren’t rolling out smart meters to all customers until the updated model is available in 2018.

Octopus Energy does not support prepayment meters, if you want to switch to them you will need your current supplier to change your meter to a credit meter.

All of Octopus Energy's bills are produced in the online account and payments are all by direct debit.

To switch to Octopus Energy complete their energy quote and select the tariff before completing your personal and bank details. All switching will be completed for you within 17 days.

Moving Home With Octopus Energy

You can take your energy tariffs with you when you move. Firstly, you need to inform the current supplier that you are moving the supply to Octopus and then you need to contact Octopus with your new address and meter details.

May 2017, The Guardian: Octopus Energy launches a tariff which shows how much profit they are making from the household. This was set up to win back the trust of consumers and to challenge the industry on pricing.
